A Layerwise Higher-Order Approach for the Free-Edge Effect in Angle-Ply Laminates

The free edges of layered structures require special attention in design processes. Due to the discontinuous material properties, singular stress concentrations occur where layer interfaces meet edge. These bi-material points have be closely examined as possible starting for delamination In present study, we propose an efficient approximate closed-form method analyze interlaminar shear stresses symmetric angle-ply laminates under uniform axial extension and homogeneous thermal loading. bases on a higher-order layerwise displacement approach. resulting distributions first-order third-order analysis are compared validated against numerical reference data gained by self-developed finite element formulation. Especially, results show good agreement along interface, even if behavior very close vicinity free-edge cannot reproduced exactly. A comparison thickness direction shows benefit over addition, influence ply angle is both approaches.
